Jewess is an old word for a Jewish woman. You will still meet it in older novels and in some translations, but today it is usually felt as offensive, or at least and out of date. The -ess ending treats “woman” as a marked extra, and the word was often used in a cold or hostile way, as if the person were a type, not a person. Living English says Jewish woman, or simply names her as a Jew. Students need the word in order to read old pages, not in order to speak.
