A jellyfish is a sea animal with a soft, round, see-through body, often with long threads hanging down. Those threads can sting — some only a little, some badly enough to hurt a . They drift with the water more than they swim. The English name looks like jelly plus fish, because the body looks like a blob of jelly in the sea; though actually it is not a fish at all — no bones, no face like a fish. Children meet them on beaches, and news stories talk about big groups in warm water. Some kinds are dried and eaten; the living animal people warn you about is still called a jellyfish.

組成jelly + fish. The jelly piece goes back through French gelée to Latin words for frost and freezing; fish is the ordinary English word for a water animal. The animal is named for the look, not because it is a true fish.
