Jafaican is a nickname for a way of speaking you hear from some young people in London, especially in neighbourhoods where many backgrounds mix. The speech takes a lot of its rhythm and words from Jamaican English (and other Caribbean talk), then blends that with London English and bits from other languages around the city. The name itself is a blend of Jamaican and fake — “fake Jamaican” — so it already sounds cheeky. Newspapers liked the word; many linguists, and many of the speakers, do not, because the accent is a real local voice, not a costume, and it is not only Jamaican. A kinder, more careful name is London English. You would not drop Jafaican into a formal essay unless you were talking about the nickname. For a student in Taiwan: picture a London youth accent with a Caribbean flavour, and know that the name can sting.
