    Ivy is a climbing plant. It holds onto walls, trees, and fences with little roots along the stem, and its leaves are dark green and often shiny, with a few points like a hand. In winter it stays green, which is why people plant it on old buildings and in gardens. A thick coat of ivy can look beautiful on stone, though actually it can also hide cracks and make brick damp, so argue about it. Poison ivy is a different plant (it is not this ivy) that gives many people a nasty rash — the name borrowed the word because the leaves can look a little similar. The Ivy League in the United States took its name from the ivy on old college walls; that is a later nickname, not a second plant.
