組成English inherited the name from Old English Italia, from Latin Italia, from Ancient Greek. It is usually explained as a sister of Latin vitulus, “calf,” from an Oscan name (víteliú) meaning something like “land of young bulls” — a young bull is a year-old animal, from a very old root for “year.” Some ancient Greek writers said it was named after a king, Italus. That king-story may be how they made sense of the name; the “calves” story is the one scholars more often tell. The Italian name Italia is the same word in another shape.
