Israel is a country on the east side of the Mediterranean Sea. Egypt sits to the south-west, Jordan to the east, Lebanon to the north. It is a small country, but it is in the news a lot. The modern state was set up in 1948 as a home for Jewish people from many lands. That land had been part of Palestine, and this is not a tidy story: several wars have followed, and many people in nearby Arab countries — and many Palestinians — do not accept Israel as it stands. Palestinians also live inside Israel, and in the West Bank and Gaza; the fight over land, homes, and rights is still going on. Israel calls Jerusalem its capital. Not every country treats it that way, which is why you will still hear Tel Aviv named as the place where embassies used to sit. In everyday English, Israel is the country. A person from the modern country is Israeli. In the Bible, Israel is also the name given to Jacob, and then to his people and their old kingdom — that older sense lives on in church and history talk, but the news almost always means the state.
組成From Hebrew יִשְׂרָאֵל (yisra'él). In the Bible this is the name given to Jacob after a story in which he wrestles; people have read it as “he wrestles with God”, “he prevails with God”, or “God rules”. English took the name through Greek and Latin, then Old English.
