An Islamist is a person who wants Islam to have a stronger say in law and government, not only in private faith. The word is also an adjective: an Islamist party, Islamist ideas. It is built from Islam + -ist, the ending that makes “a person of this -.” A quieter university cousin is Islamicist, which more often means someone who studies Islam; you will rarely need that word. Though actually, Islamist is not the same as Muslim. A Muslim is anyone who follows Islam. An Islamist is someone with this political aim. News English uses Islamist a great deal, and it can sound like a charge; in careful writing people try to say what the person actually wants, not only the label. It is a formal, adult word — not a playground word, and not a for “Islamic,” which is the ordinary adjective for things of the religion (Islamic art, Islamic law as a field of study).
