Isaiah was a Hebrew holy man who spoke for God in the 700s BC. Jewish and Christian teaching remember him as a prophet: someone who brings God’s message to the people. He said that God would send a special chosen person — a messiah — to save the Jews. The Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament holds the words people believe he spoke, and also later writing that grew around his name. You will meet him in religion class, in church or synagogue reading, and sometimes as a boy’s name in English. Though actually, the book is long and not all one voice. Scholars often say the first part is closer to Isaiah’s own time, and later parts were written by people who followed his way of thinking, years after he died. That does not make the book less loved; it only means “Isaiah” on the cover is both a man and a tradition.
