Jeremiah is the English name of a Hebrew prophet from the sixth century BC, in the Jewish and Christian Bible. He said Jerusalem would be taken, and that God was angry and would punish the people. The Book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament holds those warnings; people also remember him as a man of deep grief, the prophet. The name comes from Hebrew, literally ' exalt' — God lifts up. In ordinary English, a Jeremiah is also a person who always says that bad things are coming — a gloomy warner. That second use is a little literary and a little teasing. Though actually the everyday English name Jeremy is the same name in a softer shape; churches in Taiwan say 耶利米 for the prophet.
