If a thought, fear, or choice is irrational, it is not built on clear thinking. The feeling may be strong, but the reasons do not hold — or there are no real reasons, only a jump. A fear of a tiny harmless spider can be irrational: you know, if you stop, that it cannot hurt you, but the fear still runs. People also call a sudden spend, or a sudden blame, irrational when it does not follow from the facts. The word is a little formal. In speech people often say “that doesn’t make sense” or “I wasn’t thinking straight.” It is not the same as stupid. An irrational moment can happen to a careful person. You can call a fear irrational, a decision irrational, or, more sharply, a person irrational in that moment.
