Irradiation means exposing something to radiation on purpose, usually for a specific reason. Food irradiation uses radiation to kill bacteria and make food last longer without using chemicals or heat. In medicine, irradiation can also mean radiation treatment aimed at killing cancer cells. It sounds scary because of the word 'radiation,' but controlled irradiation is a normal, regulated process in both food safety and medicine.
