Iridium is a chemical element — a real metal, with the symbol Ir. It is very hard and very heavy. It sits with platinum in a small group of metals, and jewellers sometimes mix it with platinum to make the metal stronger. Scientists also use it in tools and instruments that must stay tough. The name comes from iris, the old word for rainbow, because many of its salts shine in bright colours.
