Iraq is an oil-producing country in southwest Asia, between Iran and Saudi Arabia, with Kuwait to the south. The capital is Baghdad. Under its leader Saddam Hussein, Iraq was at war with Iran from 1980 to 1988. In 1990 it invaded Kuwait, and that led to the Gulf War, when a group of countries pushed the Iraqi army back. In 2003, forces led by the US invaded Iraq to remove Hussein from power and to look for weapons of mass destruction — very powerful weapons they believed he had. Those weapons were not found, and the war and the years after it caused great harm. Though actually, Iraq is not Iran: different country, different people, different adjective (Iraqi, not Iranian). The two names look uncomfortably alike on an English page, which is why so many learners swap them.
