This is really two different words. The common modern one describes something not legally or officially acceptable, or that doesn't follow the rules — 'an invalid ticket,' 'your password is invalid.' The older, more formal one refers to a person who is very sick, , or disabled and needs care — this meaning is now considered old-fashioned and a bit , so specific, respectful descriptions are used instead today.
