An Inuk is a person of the Inuit peoples — the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic, especially in what is now Canada, Greenland, and parts of Alaska. Learner books may treat Inuk as simply another word for “an Inuit,” and English speakers often do say an Inuit for one person. Though actually, in Inuktitut Inuk is one person and Inuit is the people (it already means “the people”). Careful English follows that: one Inuk, many Inuit — not Inuits. Capitalize it as you would a people name. Do not reach for Eskimo if you can help it; many Inuit, especially in Canada, find it outdated or insulting. Inuk is not a nickname and not a costume word; it names a person.
