Introspection is the act of looking into your own mind. You stop and ask: What am I feeling? Why did I do that? What do I really want? It is thinking about your thoughts, your feelings, and your behaviour — not about other people, and not about the outside world. A quiet walk after an argument can turn into introspection. Keeping a diary can be a kind of introspection. Psychology uses this word a lot; in ordinary talk people more often say thinking about myself or looking inward. It is a calm, serious word, not a doctor's word, and not automatically sad — though people who are hurting often do more of it. Though actually, too much introspection can become going round and round in your head; the word itself does not praise or blame the habit. It names the process, not the personality. A related personality word is , which is about where you get your energy, not about whether you examine yourself.
