If something is intrinsic, it belongs to the thing itself — it is part of what that thing is, not something added from outside. A cat's curiosity is intrinsic to cats, in a way a collar is not. Pain has an intrinsic job in the body: it warns you. People also talk about intrinsic value: what something is worth because of what it is, not because someone put a price on it. In school you will meet intrinsic motivation — wanting to do something because the thing itself matters to you, not because of a prize or a grade. The word is fairly formal; in easy talk people say part of its nature, built-in, or it comes from inside. Though actually, inside can you: intrinsic is not about a physical inside, like the inside of a box. It is about character and nature. The opposite idea is — coming from outside.

From Middle French intrinsèque, from Latin intrīnsecus 'on the inside, inwardly'.
源自中古法文，來自拉丁文 intrīnsecus「在裡面」。
組成From older French intrinsèque, from Latin intrinsecus, 'on the inside, from within'. Latin built it from inter (within) + secus (by, on the side), so the pieces say 'on the inward side' — which is why the English word is about nature, not about rooms.
