Interlingua is a made-up international language, published in 1951. It was built from words many European languages already share, so a doctor or scientist who knew those languages could often read it without a long new study. Some medical and science meetings have used it as a shared language. The name is a proper name for this one project. Though actually, the Latin pieces just mean “between-language,” and similar names have been coined more than once; in English dictionaries, Interlingua still points to this 1951 language, not to “any language people use between countries.” It is also not Esperanto. Esperanto is a different invented language, with its own fans and a different design. Interlingua tried to look familiar to people who already knew French, Spanish, Italian, or English science words. You will almost never hear it in a Taiwan classroom unless someone is talking about invented languages.
