Intergalactic means between galaxies. A galaxy is a huge family of stars; our sun lives in one called the Milky Way. So something intergalactic is happening in the space between those whole families, not just between two nearby stars. In careful science talk, that is a very big distance. In films and games, though actually, people often use intergalactic to mean “way out in space, really far and ,” even when the story never leaves one galaxy. Younger speakers may hear it first from Star Wars-style talk; scientists keep it tighter. It is not a kitchen-table word. If you only mean “in space,” space or in space is enough.
