An interest-free loan — or an interest-free period on a credit card — means the lender does not add extra money on top of what you borrowed, as a charge for using their money. Interest here is that extra charge, not “being interested in” something. If you borrow 10,000 and the loan is interest-free, you pay back 10,000, not 10,000 plus a percentage. Shops and banks advertise interest-free deals to make buying feel easier. Though actually, the rest of the deal may still cost you: the goods may be priced higher, the free stretch of time may be short, and a high rate may start the day after. So the word is honest about the interest, but you still need to read the small print.
interest-free 用來形容沒有利息的貸款或分期，例如「an interest-free loan」。它的意思是借錢的人不會在你借的金額之外再加收費用。這裡的利息是那筆額外的費用，不是「對某件事感興趣」。舉例來說：「If you borrow 10,000 and the loan is interest-free, you pay back 10,000, not 10,000 plus a percentage.」，也就是借一萬，只還一萬，不用另外加上百分比。商店和銀行常用「interest-free deals」來宣傳，讓買東西感覺比較輕鬆。
