1. 1

Interdepartmental means something that goes between different departments inside the same organisation — a company, a university, a hospital, or a government office. A department here is a team that handles one kind of work: sales, finance, human resources, and so on. An interdepartmental meeting is one where people from more than one of those teams sit down together. The same idea holds for a memo, a committee, or a project: it is not one team’s private job. The word belongs to office and government English, and it sounds a little formal. Though actually, it does not mean “between countries” — that is international — and it does not mean “between buildings.” In a small company people may just say “across teams.”
