Intercontinental means “from one continent to another,” or “happening between two continents.” An intercontinental flight crosses an ocean to another continent. News also talks about intercontinental missiles, which can travel that far. Sport sometimes has an intercontinental cup. The word sounds a bit big and official. Though actually, people sometimes say intercontinental when they only mean a very long international trip. The strict idea is continent to continent, not just country to country: a flight from Taiwan to Japan is international, but it is not intercontinental, because both places are in Asia.
