To inter someone is to bury a dead person, usually with care, in the ground. You will meet this word in news about funerals, in history, and in formal writing. Ordinary families almost never say it. They say “bury.” Soldiers, priests, and newspapers still use “inter,” especially in set phrases like “interred with full honours.” It comes from an old idea of putting a body in the earth. Though actually, this is not the little prefix inter- that means “between” in words like international. Same spelling, different story. And it is not Inter the football club, and not intern (a at a hospital).
