Intellectualism is a habit or a belief, not a person. It is living through ideas: reading, arguing, trusting the mind. In philosophy it can mean the claim that reason is the right road to knowledge, ahead of feeling or faith. In ordinary comment it can be warmer or colder. Sometimes it just means a love of hard thought. Sometimes it is a mild complaint: too much brain, not enough heart or doing. The well-educated person who sits with ideas is an intellectual. What they practise, or the “” people argue about, is intellectualism. You will meet the word in essays more than in daily chat.
