An insurgency is an attempt by a group to take power from a government by force. It is not a fight that lasts one night, and it is not always a full war between two armies — though it can grow into one. News writers use the word for a longer campaign of attacks, often from inside the country, against the people in charge. It is a formal, political word. Who counts as part of an "insurgency" and who counts as a "freedom fight" is often a fight about words, not only about facts: the same group can be named differently depending on who is speaking.
