Inscrutability is the quality of being impossible to read. When someone's face does not move — no pleasure, anger, or doubt showing — that stillness is their inscrutability: you cannot tell what they feel or think. Writers also stretch it a little to a smile, a look, or even a plan whose meaning will not come out. It is a formal, noun. In speech people are more likely to say I cannot read him than to name his inscrutability.
