An inscription is the writing itself once it has been put there: the words on a , the date on a coin, the short message written in the front of a book. It is a thing you can point at, not the act of writing. Formal enough for museums and history books, but you will also hear it about a gift book. Though actually, an inscription is usually short — stone, metal, and the front page of a book do not give you much room — so it is not a long piece of writing.
