If a place is insanitary, it is very dirty in a way that can make people ill — broken toilets, rotting rubbish, unsafe water, rooms that have not been cleaned for far too long. This is a rather official word. You meet it in news, court cases, and inspection reports: insanitary conditions, insanitary housing. Though actually, everyday American English almost always says unsanitary instead; insanitary sounds more British and more 'on paper'. It is not a casual word for a messy bedroom. is a mess; insanitary is dirt that is a health risk.
