An inpatient is someone who stays in hospital while they receive treatment — they have a bed, they sleep there, they do not just visit and go home. Hospitals also use it as a describing word: inpatient care, an inpatient ward, inpatient surgery. The pair on the other side is outpatient: you come in for a check or a procedure and leave the same day. Though actually, “inpatient” is hospital and insurance English. Families usually just say “he’s in hospital” or “she’s staying overnight.” The in- here means “inside,” not “not.”
