An inlet is a narrow strip of water that reaches into the land from a sea, lake, or river — smaller than a bay, but the same basic idea: water pushing into the coastline, often calm and . There's also a technical, mechanical meaning: an inlet is an opening where something, like air, water, or fuel, enters a machine or pipe — the opposite of an "outlet," where it leaves.
