    Infrared is a type of light energy that our eyes can't see, sitting just beyond red on the light spectrum — that's where the name comes from ('infra' means 'below,' as in below red on the spectrum). We feel infrared as heat, which is why heat lamps, night-vision cameras, and some remote controls all use it — a TV remote sends invisible infrared light signals to the television.
