Infidel is a harsh, old word for someone who does not share your religion. People who used it were not describing a neighbour kindly; they were drawing a line: “you are not one of us, and that is bad.” Christians once used it for Muslims, and similar heat travelled the other way too. In English the word still carries that insult. Do not use it for a who believes something different. You will still meet it in history books. Though actually, some people today throw it around as a joke or as political spice, but it still lands as an insult. It is not a neutral word for “someone of another faith.” Those words are a person of a different religion, or the group’s own name.
組成First attested 1460, from Middle French infidèle, from Latin īnfidēlis (“unfaithful”), from in- (“not”) + fidēlis (“faithful”). See fidelity.
