- 1
Infertility is when a person or a couple cannot easily have a baby — when pregnancy does not come, or is very hard to carry. It can be a problem for the woman, the man, or both together; the word does not point to only one of them. Doctors use it as a calm medical word. It is not a joke, and it can be a painful subject, so people often speak about it gently. Though actually, “unable to have a baby” is a bit too sharp: many people with infertility do have a child later, with time, treatment, or another kind of family. The opposite idea is fertility: the ability to have children.
