If something is inequitable, it is not equally fair to everyone. The rules, the tax, the split of money or chances favour some people and leave others worse off — even if nobody meant to be cruel. It is a formal word, at home in law, policy, and careful argument, not in a fight with a friend, where people say unfair. Though actually, unfair is broader (a rude comment can be unfair). Inequitable points at a system or arrangement that does not treat people even-handedly. It is also not the same as unequal: a result can be unequal (the amounts differ) without being inequitable (the process was fair), and the other way round. Do not mix it with iniquitous, which means wicked — they look neighbourly on the page, but they are different words.
