This is the adjective. Something or someone that is individualistic goes its own way rather than following the crowd. You can use it about a person ('she's very individualistic'), about a style ('an individualistic way of painting'), and — this is the useful part — about a whole culture or country ('American society is individualistic; many East Asian societies are more collective'). That last use is very common in textbooks, sociology classes, and business writing, and it is probably where students will meet the word most. Compared with the noun , the adjective feels cooler and more distant. It describes a quality rather than praising a person. And here is the honest part: individualistic can lean slightly negative in a way that usually does not. If your boss says your work is 'a bit individualistic', that is a gentle complaint — you are not fitting in with the team. Tone of voice and context do most of the work. Note also that although the word is long, it is not formal-only; ordinary people use it in ordinary conversation, just a little more in writing than in speech.
組成individual + -ist + -ic, or you can read it as individualist + -ic. The ending -ic turns a noun into an adjective: it means 'having to do with this, of this kind'.
