Indiana is a state in the Midwest of the United States, between Ohio and Illinois, with a small touch of Lake Michigan in the north. People often picture flat , corn and soybeans, and small towns; that picture is fair, though there are cities and factories too. People from Indiana are called Hoosiers — a nickname nobody fully agrees on. The place was named Indiana Territory in 1800 because many Native American peoples lived there: Indian plus a Latin-style ending -a. It is not named after the country India, and it is not the same word as Indianapolis, which is only the capital city. Informal “Indy” usually points to that city or to its famous car race, not to the whole state.
