To inculcate an idea is to put it into someone’s mind so firmly that it stays — often by repeating it, or by raising a child with it. Schools, parents, and religions inculcate values: honesty, hard work, love of country. It is a formal, slightly old-fashioned verb. You would not tell a friend “I inculcated my little .” You would say you taught him, or drilled it into him. Though actually, the word can feel a bit heavy, even . Some people use it with a , as if the ideas were forced in. Others use it as praise: a good teacher inculcates good habits. The tidy dictionary says “teach,” but the real flavour is “stamp it in until it does not come out.” Older English also used it as an adjective, like a Latin participle; today it is almost only a verb.
