If something is incontrovertible, it is so clearly true that nobody can honestly prove it false. The door on the argument is shut: more talk will not turn the fact around. You meet this word in law, science, history, and careful essays, not in chat with friends. People put it with evidence and proof — an incontrovertible video, an incontrovertible fact — and it feels formal and heavy. Though actually, speakers sometimes reach for it when they only mean “I am very sure,” and that is looser than the word promises. A favourite colour is not incontrovertible; a measurement everyone can check might be. Using it about small everyday things can sound as if you are trying to win a fight.
組成From in- (“not”) + controvertible (“able to be argued against”). Controvertible is controvert (“to argue that something is wrong”) + -ible (“able to be”). The whole word means “not able to be argued against.”
