Incomprehension is the state of not being able to understand something. A look of incomprehension is the face you make when the idea has not gone in. People use it for a short moment — staring at a page, missing a joke — and also for a longer failure to understand a person, a custom, or a whole subject. It is a fairly formal noun, more often written than spoken. Though actually, it is not a rude word for “being stupid.” A clever person can sit in incomprehension when the explanation is poor, the language is new, or the idea has never come their way before.
