When something happens incomprehensibly, you cannot understand it — or you can understand it only with great difficulty. People use this word of speech, writing, or behaviour that the mind cannot get hold of: a lecture given too fast, a choice that seems to have no reason, a sentence so tangled that nobody can follow it. It is a strong and rather formal word, more at home in news and essays than at the dinner table, though actually speakers do reach for it in talk when they want to sound sharp: “He incomprehensibly said no” means the refusal is so odd that you cannot see why. It does not mean the thing is secret, and it does not mean “very.” It means your mind cannot take it in.
