If someone is inattentive, they are not giving enough attention to a person or a task. A driver can be inattentive; a can be inattentive during a lesson; a friend can be inattentive while you are talking. It is the adjective that matches . Teachers write it on reports. Doctors also use inattentive for a type of ADHD where the main difficulty is focus, not bouncing around. Though actually, in ordinary English it just means “not paying enough attention,” with no medical meaning unless the context is medical. It is a little formal; in speech we often say “not paying attention” or “distracted.” It does not, by itself, mean rude. Someone can be inattentive because they are tired, worried, or lost in thought.
