Inappropriacy is the name for the quality of not being suitable — not right for this purpose, this place, this person, or this moment. The thing itself may be fine; it just does not fit here. We use it most about behaviour, clothes, and especially words: a joke, a question, a way of speaking. It is a formal noun, more at home in careful British writing and in language class than in the street. Though actually, a lot of people, especially in American English, would say inappropriateness instead and mean almost the same thing. Inappropriacy leans a little toward “wrong for the situation” (you would not say that to a boss, or at a funeral), rather than “bad in itself.” It does not mean the person is unkind or unskilled. It means the fit is off.
