    Inanimate means not living. A rock is inanimate; a cat is not. School grammar also talks about inanimate nouns — words for things, not people or animals. Though actually, people stretch it: an inanimate conversation means a dull one, as if the talk itself had no life. The core meaning is still “without life.” Unconscious is different: an unconscious person is alive, just not awake. Dead is also different: dead things were once alive; inanimate things (a chair, a stone) never were. There is a rare noun for “an inanimate thing,” but the adjective is what you will see.

組成in- (“not”) + animate (“having life”). From Late Latin inanimātus, from Latin in- + animātus. Animate goes back to Latin anima, “breath, soul.”
