Inactivity is the state of not doing anything, not moving, or not working. A body can sit in inactivity. A factory can fall into inactivity. A phone can show inactivity if nobody has used it. Doctors talk about physical inactivity — sitting too long, hardly moving. News may talk about economic inactivity, meaning people are not in paid work. It names a stretch of time when nothing is going on. Slightly formal; everyday talk may just say “not doing much” or “it’s been quiet”. Though actually it is quieter than inaction. Inaction often means “they did not step in”. Inactivity can just mean “nothing is moving”, with less blame.
組成in- (not) + activity. The in- is the old “not”; activity came into English from French activité, from Latin. Latin also had ināctīvus.
