In-ear describes headphones that sit inside the opening of your ear, often with a soft tip that seals a little. They are not the big cups that go around the ear, and they are not the pads that rest on the ear. Musicians also talk about in-ear monitors: small earpieces that play the mix back on stage so they can hear themselves in a loud room. In shops you will see in-ear headphones on the box. Though actually, everyday speakers sometimes call all small in-ear, even cheap buds that only sit in the bowl of the ear and do not really go in. People who sell audio gear are pickier about that.
「in-ear」用來形容入耳式耳機，也就是戴在耳道口、前端有軟塞、可以稍微密封的耳機。它跟耳罩式不一樣，耳罩式是包住整個耳朵的大耳罩；也跟貼耳式不同，貼耳式是靠墊子貼在耳朵上。買耳機的時候，盒子上常會寫「in-ear headphones」。
音樂圈也會用「in-ear monitors」，那是舞台上的入耳式監聽耳機，讓樂手在吵雜的現場也能清楚聽到自己和其他人的混音。
一般人有時會把所有小耳機都叫做入耳式，連只放在耳甲腔裡、沒有真正塞進去的便宜耳塞也一起算。不過賣音響設備的人會比較講究，會把這幾種分開。
