An impudent person is rude and does not show respect — and often does not care that you mind. We use it of people, faces, questions, and replies: an impudent grin, an impudent question. The old heart of the word is : not modest, not . That still sits under the modern meaning. It is more written than spoken now. In talk, people say rude, cheeky, or disrespectful. Cheeky can be almost fond, like a child being bold in a cute way. Impudent is not fond. It is a telling-off. Though actually, older speakers reach for it more than younger ones, who may just say rude and stop there.
組成From Middle English impudent, originally “immodest, shameless,” from Latin impudēns (“shameless”), from in- (“not”) + pudere (“to feel shame”).
