Impudence is with no shame in it. It is not only a sharp word; it is the attitude of someone who does not show respect, and does not even look sorry. A child who answers a teacher back; a stranger who talks to you as if you were nobody — that is impudence. The word is rather old-fashioned and a little stiff. Parents and teachers used to say “the impudence!” the way people now say “the cheek of it” or “how rude.” Cheek and nerve are the everyday cousins; impudence names the quality in a heavier voice. Though actually, what counts as impudence depends on who has power in the room. The same joke can sound funny from a friend and impudent from someone younger or lower in rank.
