Impolitic means — a move that is not careful, and that may make people think you are not sensible. It is not about manners. You can be perfectly polite and still be impolitic: you said the true thing at the worst time, or you upset the wrong person. The word is formal. You meet it in news, , and careful advice: “It would be impolitic to criticise the host at his own table.” Everyday speakers more often say , a bad idea, or a bad look. Though actually, here means “sensible and careful,” not “about government.” That is why impolitic and look like cousins on the page but name two different mistakes: one is a social slip; the other is a foolish move.
