If someone is impious, they lack respect for religion or for God. The word can describe a person, a remark, a book, a joke. It is a formal, rather churchy adjective: you are more likely to meet it in a sermon, a history, or a novel than in a chat about the weekend. It does not simply mean “not religious.” A quiet person who never goes to temple is not automatically impious; the word wants a shade of disrespect — speaking lightly of what others hold holy, or acting as if the sacred does not count. Though actually, people have always argued about the line: one listener hears an honest question; another hears an impious attack. It is stronger and colder than cheeky, and much more serious than impish. In ordinary speech, rude about religion or disrespectful does more of the work.
