When a talk, a book, or a remark is illuminating, it makes an idea much clearer and easier to understand — as if someone turned a light on in a dark room. Teachers and love this use. The same spelling is also the -ing form of illuminate, so lamps can be illuminating a path, and a new fact can be illuminating a problem. This entry is for the “helps you understand” sense.
